Remembering with Lilly of the Valley

Lily of the Valley blooming in author Linda Hubalek's flower bed.I can just think the words “May Day” and it brings up instant colors and scents of spring blooming flowers to my mind.

Right now my Lily of the Valley flowers are blooming. I love the delicate little bells trailing up the stems. I have to get down on my hands and knees to inhale their sweet fragrance—but it is so worth the effort.

I shouldn’t really say “my” flowers because they were originally growing around the foundation of my grandparent’s house. Prior to the sale for my grandparents belongings and home in 1981 (see post on April 4, 2011); I dug up a starts of their perennials to move to Nebraska where I was currently living.

And I moved the plants again and again over the next thirty years as we lived in three states before moving back to Kansas.

Every spring when the little pips poke out of the ground and bloom, I can see my Grandpa and Grandma out enjoying their gardens.

What a great reminder of my ancestors…All because of a tiny white flower that blooms each May.
